Asplenium wrightii

D.C.Eaton ex Hook.

Wright's Bird's Nest Fern

Aspleniaceae

Asplenium wrightii is a species of fern in the family Aspleniaceae. It is native to China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Asplenium wrightii is part of a species complex, and the taxonomy of the genus as a whole is in need of a revision (Wu et al. 2013).

Description

Asplenium wrightii grows to 35 to 70 cm tall, and occasionally up to 120 cm. Rhizomes have brown narrowish triangular scales, 5 to 7 mm long and about 1 mm wide. Fronds are lanceolate, about 40 to 70 cm long and 15 to 25 cm wide. They are pinnate, with 12 to 25 alternate pairs. They have 4 to 8 mm long stalks, that are angled 50 to 60° from the main stalk. Leaflets are asymmetric, sickle-shaped, about 10 to 14 cm long and about 1.5 to 1.9 cm wide. Leaflets may have entire, crinkly, wavy, or toothed margins. The leaflet at the end usually has deeper teeth, and is more pointed. Stalks have small red-brown scales. Sori are linear and parallel to the veins, about 9 to 12 mm long (Wu et al. 2013).
