Dryopteris commixta

Tagawa

Mixed Wood Fern

Dryopteridaceae

Dryopteris commixta is a species of fern in the family Dryopteridaceae. It is native to southeastern China and Japan.

Description

Dryopteris commixta grows up to 90 cm tall and spreads via rhizomes. Rhizomes are densely covered with dark lanceolate scales. Leaves are pinnate-pinnatifid, lanceolate or slightly elliptic. The blade is 35 to 50 cm long on a roughly 25 cm long stipe. The middle portion is about 25 cm wide, the base is narrowed, and the tip is pointed. Fronds have 15 to 20 alternate pairs of leaflets; the leaflets are lanceolate but slightly uneven at the base. Leaflets are up to 15 cm long and 1.2 cm wide, with rounded to truncate bases, shortly stalked or stalkless, pointed at the tip. Leaflets are divided into finely toothed, pointed lobes. Leaves are smooth above, with fibrous or scaly veins below. The midrib is covered with dark brown, linear scales. Sori are borne on the underside of leaflets; indusia are roughly round (Wu et al. 2013).

Dryopteris commixta is similar to Dryopteris cycadina. This species, in comparison to D. cycadina, has broader fronds and stalked, more deeply lobed leaflets. Plants cultivated as Dryopteris cycadina may actually be mislabeled as this species (Hoshizaki and Wilson 1999).
