Trees of North America
This collection contains tree species found in North America. It aims to cover the continental United States and Canada; all native trees, and non-native trees that have naturalized, are to be covered.
The flora of North America is extremely diverse. For example, the Northeast is known for deciduous trees like the sugar maple (Acer saccharum), which light up in bright shades of yellow and red during the fall. The Southeast has habitats ranging from the Ozark Plateau to wet bottomlands, and Florida alone has hundreds of species found nowhere else on the continent. The dry Southwest is characterized by conifers and drought-tolerant plants, while the Northwest is home to one of the largest temperate rainforests.
Ailanthus altissima
Ailanthus
Simaroubaceae
Ailanthus altissima is a deciduous tree species in the family Simaroubaceae. It is native to eastern Asia, but has been cultivated globally and is now a notoriously invasive species. It features as the metaphor of Betty Smith’s novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, alluding to its resilience even in difficult environments (MBG).
